These pictures show Our Gang cast members mostly during the silent era and mostly from the time period from 1924 to 1926. All of them feature Mary Kornman, the leading lady of the Gang at that time. The pictures are from my personal collection. They are rare and most have never been published. They are here for your enjoyment. Please do not copy these photos for use elsewhere, or direct link to the image files.
| This is an informal, posed shot of Mary Kornman, probably taken around 1925. Scanned from an original photograph. The caption on the back of the photo reads "An Our Gang star of yesteryear - Mary Kornman." |
| A staged scene not associated with any particular Our Gang film. Scanned from an original photograph. From left to right as Mickey Daniels, Mary Kornman, Johnny Downs, and Joe Cobb. Notice that Mary is stealing Johnny's watch while reading Joe's palm. |
| A candid shot of Mickey Daniels and Mary Kornman, taken around 1924 from the looks of it. Scanned from an original photograph. The back of the photo reads "Mickey Daniels and Mary Kornman of Hal Roach's Our Gang." |
| A publicity shot of Our Gang - probably done in Robert McGowan's office. Scanned from an original photo. The lack of contrast is due to the photograph beginning to fade. The back of the photo has the following text: '"Our Gang" With Frank L. Newman, Managing Director of the Metropolitan, Rialto, and Million Dollar Theatres, Los Angeles Paramont Houses, and Robert McGowan, Who Directs Hal Roach's "Our Gang" for Pathe Comedies. On Occasion of Personal Appearance of the Gang at the Metropolitan, the Largest Los Angeles Thearer [sic], With "Mary, Queen Of Tots."' This film reference dates this photo to August or September 1925.
From left to right are Jackie Condon, Frank Newman, Allen (Farina) Hoskins, Mickey Daniels, Mary Kornman, Robert F. McGowan, Jerry McGowan (Robert McGowan's daughter), Johnny Downs, and Joe Cobb. My thanks to Robert Huffman, great-grandson of Robert F. McGowan, for providing the identity of Jerry McGowan in this photograph. |
| This is another informal, posed picture of Mary Kornman, also probably taken around 1925. Scanned from an original photograph. The back of the photo reads "Mary Kornman," "Please Credit to Gene Kornman," and "Hollywood Press Syndicate." Gene Kornman, Mary's father, was a staff photographer for the Hal Roach Studios, where the Our Gang Comedies were made. |
| This is probably the most intriguing photo in my collection. Scanned from an original photo. Mickey Daniels is dressed as a pirate, in imitation of Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., who had recently starred in "The Black Pirate" when this photo was taken. Mary Kornman is dressed to resemble Mary Pickford in "Sparrows." My thanks to Craig for this observation. This photo was taken either late 1926 or early 1927. Those knowledgeable about Our Gang will note that Mickey and Mary are getting too big for the Our Gang Comedies. On the back of the photo is written "In Person, Mickey Daniels, comedian, Mary Kornman, leading lady, Our Gang Comedies, Orpheum Sunday, For Sat. Express." Also stamped on the photo is "Roy George & Assoc. P.O. Box 618 Encino, California." Orpheum refers to the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles. The photo is probably a promotional picture for a personal appearance of Mickey Daniels and Mary Kornman in a vaudeville show at the Orpheum Theatre. My thanks to Dave Unger, Ken R., and Shirley Jean Measures for working out the origin and purpose of this photo. |
